School phobia is a complex problem is a child’s disproportionate fear of going to school and leaving parents; this phobia could show up as nausea, fatigue, shaking, stomachaches, a racing heart and frequent visits to the toilet. It is quite common for children to feel sometimes bored and not wanting to go to school, but when the problem becomes chronic, it needs the attention of parents as well as teachers.

Most of the causes for this phobia stems from sudden happenings in the child’s life; it could be shifting to a new area, a divorce or bereavement, a fear of being bullied, going to school after a long illness or vacation, not having good friends at school and being threatened by a newborn sibling.

Ways to help a child overcome school phobia:

  1. We as parents owe it to our children to not make a fuss over the phobia; every small move a child makes to overcome the phobia is to be appreciated and the child should be made proud of it. Loving and empathizing with the child goes a long way to help the child overcome the phobia. If the child refuses to go to children’s party alone, you could go with him and spend some time before leaving and go after some time to pick him/her back; this would not only help overcome fear, but also develop independence in the child.

  2. It would be best along with this to take into confidence the teachers and other staff at school; making them aware would remove misconceptions in their mind that the child is adamant or negligent. If the problem is severe the school counselor’s help can also be taken to make the child feel cozy and secure; a little attention and empathy goes a long way to help. Mother reassuring child

  3. Reassuring the child with making him/her to fully come out with their fears helps; it would then help to tactfully convince the child that his/her fears are either unfounded or would be resolved. If the fear is real like he/she fears the teacher then we could ask for the child to be put under another teacher or you could change the school.

  4. The same routine followed every day Monday to Friday would make the child feel more relaxed and secure to overcome school phobia. It would be best for parents to find out what the child feels excited at school and also to encourage the child to try out various other more interesting activities; all this will help in ultimately getting over the school phobia.

Most parents would be successful in helping the child overcome school phobia; however in extreme cases the help of a therapist or counselor could be sought.
