10 Things To Consider Before Getting a Dog
Have you decided to get a dog as a pet to feel not only happy, but fulfilled? Owning a dog is a wonderful experience. You would be doing something noble by adopting a dog from an animal shelter where they have been discarded due to a death in the family, illness, divorce, a new baby, behavioral problems or a move that didn’t include them.
10 things to consider before getting a pet dog:
1) Dogs are affectionate and faithful pets that require a lot of your time and energy; owning a pet dog is not for those that have long working hours or are not in a position to give quality time for the pet.
2) If you get a pet dog, you will first have to consider if it is suitable for your lifestyle and environment. If you live in a small apartment you would do best to own small dogs and not big dogs; large dogs belong to big places and need a lot of outdoor space. In its absence your pet dog may get bored, develop health issues and destroy things.
3) Never adopt a pet dog that needs a lot of exercise and quality time if you are not often at home; it would be wise to choose a certain breed of dog that does not require a lot of attention or engage a dog walker who would regularly attend to it.
4) Adopting a puppy could involve time, money and effort especially since they have to be house trained not to chew things up. If you do not have the time and money for training, it would be best to adopt a housebroken, adult dog.
5) If you wish to keep an outside dog and you have a yard, it would be best to choose a breed that is suitable to your region’s climate.

6) Adopting a puppy means making available a lot of chew toys and keeping all expensive things like shoes and clothes out of its reach. It also means keeping chemicals, medicines and all dangerous things from the reach of the puppy since puppies like to investigate and try everything.
7) Getting a dog also means getting it vaccinated, sprayed and neutered if it has not already been and also to arrange for routine checkups by a vet. This would promote the quality of life and longevity of the dog.
8) Next it is best to cover health expenses of a pet dog by taking up health insurance. Your vet would be the best person to advice you on options.
9) Adopting a dog also means getting the right size leash and harness for your dog; it should be neither small to hurt the dog, nor long to hurt others or get loose and run away.
10) Lastly dogs are faithful and wonderful companions; just get a breed of your choice and enjoy yourself.
