Hamsters are usually very healthy creatures and they could stay so, only if we followed a few great ways to do so; keep your hamster healthy by these 10 great ways.

10 great ways to keep a hamster healthy:

1) Ensure that your hamster eats well, both quantitatively and qualitatively; they need a well balanced diet of not only a wide variety of foods like seeds and pellets, but also  fruits and vegetables.

2) Next hamsters need fruits and vegetables; ensure you give them small amounts at one time. Hamsters enjoy fresh veggies like carrots, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumber, romaine lettuce, spinach and other greens that are rinsed in water. Fresh fruits like apples, pears, bananas, grapes and most berries that are well washed are also good for them. However avoid citrus fruits like oranges, limes, lemons or grapefruit.

3) In addition to fruits and veggies hamsters also love whole grain breads and cereals and it is vital to also add proteins to a hamster’s diet. A good treat would be plain scrambled or boiled egg. Moderation and variety are the rule as far as a hamster’s meal is concerned; provide  standard seed and pellet mix daily, with treats as an addition.

4) Keeping the hamster healthy also involves carefully selecting the hamster’s bed and changing it regularly. It would also be right to give the cage a scrub and thoroughly rinse the water bottle; water at room temperature could grow algae and develop bacteria that would hamper the health of the hamster. Your hamster would be happier and healthier in a clean cage.

5) Hamsters appreciate spacious and exciting living quarters and need space to exercise and keep fit. It would be great to get them toys and provide them with paper towel tubes,  plain brown boxes and other items to chew on regularly.

6) Your hamster requires exercise so make sure he has access to toys, like a running wheel or things to climb on and in. You could also have tubing addition to his cage in addition to taking a spin in a hamster ball.

7) Ensure you put the hamster’s cage in a safe place away from direct sunlight or a heater, the dark or the cold basement. Also ensure his cage cannot easily be knocked over by other pets and wobbly toddlers.

8) Ensure that you have an eye on your hamster in his cage; hamsters are great escapists and could easily escape from the cage by chewing the wire or plastic.

9) Ensure that you keep your hamster’s teeth trimmed well; hamsters are born with a full set of teeth that keep growing all life. It would help to give them hard items like paper towel tubes or wooden treats and dog biscuits to chew on. Dog biscuits are not only a treat but also provide the hamster with a good source of calcium.

10) If you want your hamster to have a companion decide on it at the very beginning as they very rarely turn friendly when introduced later. Also make sure both hamsters are of the same sex; a litter of hamsters can range from 3 to 18, with females give birth approximately every 30 days and female hamsters having 2-3 litters in their lifetime.
